Alison Wellford:
Artista

As an abstract painter I am interested in the celebration of paint.
The malleability of substance on canvas has infinite potential. I experiment with developing and introducing less conventional mediums into my work, wax for example, particularly focusing on layering and the textures this process yields.
In my work I create a dialogue with gestures; a repetitive stroke is layered over another. Even if the layers beneath the surface are unseen, the painting retains a memory of it, via brush stroke or density of paint. These gestures form a collective, a kind of system of knowledge. They reference landscapes, architecture or an interior reality, but also reflect some nebulous cosmology, a moment, a memory or a system. I am concerned with this process, the act of building through gestures and following their narrative line.
The object of my studies is to develop the surface of the canvas as if it were the skin of a sculpture. I am expressing an abstraction of the surface of water as if the water were a sculpture and the canvas its container. These works are meditations on the fluidity of the artistic medium, the poetics of movement, the linearity of the horizon, all in an attempt to capture the essence of the water’s surface, one which is constantly being written and unwritten. I attempt to make connections between man-made materials and patterns naturally occurring in nature.
I also hope to portray the purity of idea, color, volume and gesture which is universal, as I am not concerned with art which addresses politics, gender or the specific. I am more interested in erasing identity through abstraction. I am searching for a low frequency in painting, an ambient work which functions best in the space it occupies, upon a white wall.
