Pedro Cuevas (Buenos Aires- Argentina- 1972)
The work of the artist Pedro Cuevas is the result of 10 years travelling the world to find a style that honestly portrayed his true self. The search for one´s own language is the strongest tool in producing one´s work.
.
After studying for 5 years in the university of architecture and 2 years in the Nac School of Fine Art, he felt that the best way to become an artist was to be near the work of the old masters who had the most inspired him.
.
Before arriving at Spain he spent one season in New York. His idea when leaving Argentina was to study classical art so that later, with that base he could take on contemporary art. There is a phrase in architecture that says: ” To destroy a building it is firstly necessary to construct it”, which for Pedro meant - to be able to throw a can of paint on the linen cloth, you must first know as to why. Its for this reason that after years his painting reflects the realism of the old masters, with its clearly dark technique, and the glaze of the oil.
.
Velázquez and Goya inspired him to move and live in Madrid for 5 years, where every week he visited the Prado museum, closely studying the paintings of these artists. In that time he was exposed to many other places in Madrid such as El Escorial, Segovia and also in Sintra (Portugal).
He made a long trip through Italy, from Venice to Sicily, painting and exploring the passion of the art that crossed his path. After that he travelled to Paris and Amsterdam, where he visited the museums of the Louvre and the Orsay, and there fell in love with the impressionists, and started to become closer to contemporary art.
But what really catapulted him to his present style was a pictorial trip that he made to Africa.
He went traveling with his Senagal and Mali made easel arriving in Dogón, there creating numerous oils and water colors. The trip was very hard physically and psychologically, and he was ill the greater part of the time. However, nothing stopped him painting and catching moments whatever the situation.
The method of painting that he had learned in Europe was developed now with fast brush strokes and by only allowing himself use his pure thoughts.
Once when painting in public the local people approached him and formed a very tight circle, leading to a moment of tension in which it may not have been appropriate to paint, or maybe it was...
Either way, Pedro would have to leave this circle quickly as the locals where very ill and it was dangerous to stay too long. Cuevas painted quick and impulsive portraits of the places he was in, leaving the circle and all the attention without the chance to examine his work. This situation and method of working would influence the artists style forever.
He returned to Spain and he went to live to Barcelona. Here, Pedro has participated in many collective and individual exhibitions, in galleries such as Lasanta, Iguapop, Niu, Distrito 5º, Base Elemens and also in important art festivals such as Bac ! 05 and 06, and the Samo II in the Convent of Sant Agusti. He was working for 2 years in the work shop Caminal in Poblenou, getting to know many artists who influenced his work.
Recently he returned to Berlin where he had been chosen for the epic building “The Tacheles” (www.tacheles.de) which is situated right in the center of the city. Here he shared his studio with 50 other artists who are from all over the world, presented his latest exhibition named “Die Box” (the box) which included installation and performance.
When the exhibition finished in Berlin, the idea was then to travel and not work at all, in order to see all the influences on his work. The result was a “Box” full of positive energy, the energy of love. For his next exhibitions, he has submitted “INOPERAbLE” to art galleries in Vienna, for August of this year.
