American School of Barcelona Visual Arts Philosophy
“To develop students´creative and critical abilities and to enhance their knowledge, appreciation and enjoyment of visual arts.” (IB Visual Arts Guide)
We believe the visual arts are an essential form of communication, inquiry and self-expression and that all students have inherent creative potential. From an early age, children interact with their environment and create images that express their understanding of the world. At ASB, the purpose of visual arts education builds upon these experiences. Students will think critically, creatively and aesthetically, through many experiences that develop art appreciation and a true passion for the Arts as a lifestyle.
We provide all students opportunities to develop technical skills, knowledge of elements and principles of art and design, and knowledge of art history. Classes are designed to develop skills but are open-ended allowing for individual creative freedom. Students explore a variety of media and processes and although a quality product is often inherent in artistic endeavors, the process itself is the primary focus. All classes from K3 to 10th grade follow the National Arts Education (NAEA) standards for Arts Education leading to the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts program in 11th and 12th grades.
At ASB, we extend art beyond the classroom at all levels, into the school as well as the local and global community.
