‘SKIN TO STONE, STONE TO SKIN’

Classical sculpture has aimed to capture the human figure within the monochromatic limitations of stone, thus inevitably imbuing the human body with a pristine coat that contradicts its natural textures. The folds, indentations and colouring of our bodies contradict the smooth, virginal qualities found in classical sculpture.

Instead of taking the human figure as a direct source of observation, I take an idealised representation of human form and seek to resurface it, approximating stone to skin. This becomes a reversal of methods as the artist usually travels from original to representation and I seek to create a return route, using representation as my starting point.

However, the intention behind my work is to investigate the nebulous middle ground where a return to skin and a distancing from stone does not sacrifice or erase the sculptural essence of the figures. This process becomes a perilous but intriguing balancing act between two artistic mediums, two time frames and two textures.

´Skin to stone, stone to skin´ is a modern tribute to the complexities inherent in any visual representation of the carnal.

The painting is named ‘Contemplations of Dawn’.
